    • 2023

This exploration of a royal tomb enhances our understanding of Ottoman palace culture by focusing on the Sultan Abd|lhamid I Tomb in Istanbul, also known as the Hamidiye Tomb Complex. It uncovers the lives of 86 individuals, including men, women, and children, interred within its grounds. Utilizing a variety of primary sources translated from Ottoman Turkish for the first time, the work includes archival documents, contemporary chronicles, and epitaphs. Readers are introduced to the diverse aspects of Ottoman art, architecture, language, poetry, and cultural customs found at this site. The text provides insights into the Islamic calendar, the Ottoman culture surrounding death and funerals, attitudes toward smallpox vaccination, and court titles. By examining the graves of royalty, courtiers, eunuchs, concubines, and female harem managers, the book reveals the rich court funerary culture of the era, encompassing architecture, calligraphy, funerals, and poetry. It discusses the role of royal cemeteries in reinforcing the dynasty's legitimacy and its connection to the populace. The narrative includes intriguing stories, such as that of Sultan Abdulhamid's daughter Zeyneb and Prince Murad, shedding light on palace life during a period of significant reform initiated by Sultan Mahmud II after 1826.
