This is James Waite’s second book for Pen & Sword about narrow gauge railways. He has travelled extensively in search of interesting, and often obscure, railways in remote locations.His previous book looked at the narrow gauge scene around the world and how many of its historic railways were surviving in the twenty first century. This new volume looks at some of them in greater detail and uses much hitherto unpublished material.The book is full of attractive and rarely seen photos. Some of them depict railways that were in their last days of everyday use, while others show heritage operations which still look much as they did when the trains were running commercially.

Focusing on the global implications of the French withdrawal from Vietnam in 1954, this book positions the Indochina War within the broader context of the Cold War. It challenges the notion of the conflict as merely Franco-US relations, highlighting the roles of various international actors, including Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia, Britain, China, and the Soviet Union. The narrative contends that the withdrawal, while a political setback for the Eisenhower administration, prevented major power warfare, yet led to partition and ongoing violence for the Vietnamese people.

The Talyllyn Railway is not only one of the world famous Great Little Trains of Wales, but was the first railway in the world to be owned and operated by volunteer labour. As such it was the forerunner of most of today's heritage railways. This book, compiled by James Waite, a renowned photographer of narrow gauge railways, takes the reader on a full colour photographic journey from the line's headquarters at Tywyn Wharf through the splendid Mid Wales countryside to the terminus in the forest at Nant Gwernol.
