What is the purpose of an intelligence organization? Essentially, it is to transform disparate information into a product that aids national security decision-making, ideally in a politically neutral manner. However, issues arise when intelligence is used to support specific policy preferences, leading to its distortion or manipulation. This work explores these concerns through historical case studies derived from extensive research into previously classified documents, political papers, and personal correspondence. It reveals how state secrets can be weaponized for political ends. The author examines the evolution of intelligence politicization in Australia from before Federation in 1901 to the present, providing a rich historical context for understanding the intersection of intelligence and politics. With new insights, this account sheds light on the mechanisms of intelligence manipulation and the conditions that foster politicization.
