Focusing on sustainable forest management, this project aims to secure ecosystems and biodiversity in the Miombo Woodlands of Western Tanzania while supporting food security and livelihoods. It highlights the significant charcoal consumption in Tanzania, with over 11 million people relying on it, generating substantial market value and employment. However, the unsustainable practices threaten the charcoal supply and contribute to deforestation and climate change, underscoring the need for a comprehensive policy to address these challenges in the region.

The study addresses the alarming rate of deforestation in Tanzania, primarily driven by the rising demand for charcoal as a cooking fuel, particularly in urban areas. It aims to provide empirical data and field experiences related to charcoal production and consumption to inform sustainable practices. Key objectives include examining Tanzania's energy resources, analyzing cooking energy trends, exploring the charcoal value chain for improvement opportunities, and reviewing national policies that support the charcoal sector.

Das Projekt zur nachhaltigen Waldbewirtschaftung in den Miombo-Wäldern Tansanias zielt darauf ab, die Biodiversität zu sichern und die kongolesischen Regenwälder zu schützen. Eine zentrale Maßnahme ist die Durchführung einer Marktforschung zur Holzkohleproduktion, die eine umfassende Politik zur Wertschöpfungskette entwickeln soll. Im Jahr 2012 verbrauchten über 11 Millionen Menschen in Tansania 2,33 Millionen Tonnen Holzkohle, was erhebliche wirtschaftliche Auswirkungen hatte. Dennoch gefährdet die nicht nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung der Wälder die Ressourcenschonung und führt zu Entwaldung und Klimawandel.
