Theophrastus byl nástupcem Aristotela v peripatetické škole. Zabýval se širokou škálou témat, od biologie a fyziky po etiku a metafyziku. Jeho práce o rostlinách, které významně ovlivnily středověkou vědu, mu vynesly titul „otec botaniky“.
