Charles Wright byl inovátorem, který opustil tradiční narativní postupy a vydláždil cestu pro africko-americké avantgardisty. Jeho „sociologie sociologie“ v této publikaci nepojednává obecně o tématu z oblasti sociologie vědění, ale analyzuje určitou fázi vývoje americké sociologie. Řeší otázku, jakou úlohu zaujala sociologie v narůstající masové společnosti a jakou funkci plní ve vztazích mezi elitou moci a ovládanou, řízenou masou.
