After a thirty-seven-year career as a law enforcement officer, Sam Robbins was settling into a new routine two weeks into his retirement, but this morning would prove to be anything but routine. On his morning walk he finds himself transported in time to the year 1901. His hometown of Birmingham, Alabama is struggling to emerge from a rowdy boom town into a leading industrial city and economic center of the south. Faced with the harsh reality of life in 1901, we follow his journey as he assimilates into the time, develops relationships, and struggles desperately to find a way back home while watching his city literally rise before his eyes. Along the way he encounters people and events that create more questions than answers as to how he got here and how to get home again.

In the midst of my depression, several instances of hate crimes made the national news. Were these crimes increasing or was I just more aware now? Then the world was hit by a pandemic and normal life was placed on hold as we battled to stop the spread of a virus while our government seemed to ignore what was happening. Then in the midst of the new normal of living in seclusion, more hate crimes emerged along with several instances of police brutality and heinous behaviors that made me question our morality as a nation. All of this culminated into civil unrest that we have not seen since the sixties. As I watched demonstrators, militias and police clash in several cities on my TV screen, my research became much too close to the reality of the present day for my own comfort. My hope is that the fictional story portrayed in this book causes the reader to think and consider the consequences of not only our prejudices, but also our indifference. We all bear a responsibility to not only not be a racist, but we must work tirelessly to be anti-racist by speaking out when we see hate and injustice anywhere. We must all work to do our part to love our neighbor, regardless of their skin color, lifestyle, or economic standing. Lastly, we must all be students of our history and work to make sure that the mistakes of our past and even those of our ancestors are never repeated.
