Červen 1940 v Berlíně. Nacistická propaganda oslavuje vítězství nad Francií, zatímco v bytě manželů Anny a Oty Quangelových v Prenzlauer Berg panuje hluboký zármutek. Jejich syn padl na frontě. Oba manželé dlouho věřili "vůdci" a věrně jej následovali. Nyní však poznávají v jeho slibech lži a podvody. Oba začínají psát pohlednice na znamení odporu, ke kterému chtějí vyburcovat ostatní: "zastavte válečnou mašinerii!" S nasazením života roznášejí pohlednice dům od domu. Záhy se jim dostáva na stopu SS a gestapo. A také pro vlastní sousedy se stávají nebezpečím... Poslední román Hanse Fallady (1893-1947), napsaný na podzim roku 1946 za čtyři týdny horečné práce, je autentickým svědectvím každodenního života v Berlíně během nacistické éry.

Tento společenskokritický román, podávající obraz úpadku a pádu rakousko-uherské monarchie, patří k nejvýznamnějším dílům rakouské literatury minulého století. Jeho historický rámec tvoří doba od bitvy u Solferina až po rok 1916, kdy umírá stařičký mocnář František Josef. V osudechtří generací pošlechtěné vojenskobyrokratické rodiny Trottů evokuje autor dobu, kdy hlavní město říše zářilo leskem a vojenskými parádami, při nichž se ozýval břeskný marš. Z lesku se však postupem doby stává pozlátko, nastává doba rozpadu hodnot, zdánlivá idyla je rušena stále silnějšími hlasy pokrokových hnutí ohlašujících budoucnost, která převratně zasáhne starý odumírající svět. Vojenský marš zaznívá stále méně břeskně, až je z něho jen napůl ozvěna, napůl vzpomínka z onoho světa. Román „Pochod Radeckého“ slučuje v sobě velmi zvláštním způsobem prvky zdánlivě nesourodé, jako je nostalgie a ironický odstup, melancholie a humor, láska a kritika. Je silným čtenářským zážitkem, jako trvalý umělecký obraz agónie jedné epochy, kterou historie odsoudila k zániku.

Wolfgang Koeppen is the most important German novelist of the past seventy years: a radical, not to say terrifying, stylist; a caustic, jet-black comedian; a bitter prophet. His late, autobiographical work--the short, intense autofiction, Youth, translated here for the first time--is a portrait of the little north German town of Greifswald before World War I, and is a miracle of compression: this is not historical fiction, but a kind of personal apocalypse. Also included here, in Michael Hofmann's brilliant translation, is one of Koeppen's very last works: a short, fragmentary text spoken over a 1990 German television program depicting his return visit to the town of his schooldays.
