Vzrušené diskuse, které v posledních měsících probíhají v církvi, přivedly Benedikta XVI. a kardinála Roberta Saraha k přesvědčení, že se musejí vyjádřit. Emeritní papež po své abdikaci v únoru 2013 promlouvá jen vzácně. Chráněn zdmi kláštera Mater Ecclesiae ve vatikánských zahradách se věnuje modlitbě v tichu. Společně s kardinálem Sarahem, svým velkým přítelem, se výjimečně rozhodl napsat esej k otázce, která je pro církev tou nejobtížnější: budoucnost kněží, správná definice kněžství a úcta k celibátu. Ve dvaadevadesáti letech tak Benedikt XVI. podepsal jeden ze svých nejvýznamnějších textů.
