Co w tej książce jest prawdą, a co tworem wyobraźni pisarza? Czy rzeczywiście mamy do czynienia z autentycznym, odnalezionym w weneckiej lagunie opowiadaniem Henry’ego Jamesa, czy ze znakomicie podrobionym apokryfem? Powieść Maurensiga jest książką trzyplanową. Jest w niej historia odnalezionego, niewydanego nigdy utworu Jamesa i pracy bohatera nad uratowaniem – odtworzeniem – zniszczonego tekstu, jest „Anagalis”, właściwa nowela Jamesa (Maurensiga?) o miłości i szukaniu piękna (albo odwrotnie), jest wreszcie związany z nią fragment biografii amerykańskiego pisarza, jego związku z Konstancją Woolson.
