I ta ji však okázale manipulovala do role cvičené opičky. Zamýšlí se nad tím, jak zázračnou dívku vnímal okolní svět, když kolem ní stvořil legendu, jakýsi „mýtus Nadia“, a během několika let totéž děvče zase demytizoval. A také načrtává zajímavé srovnání rolí, jež za studené války na obou stranách železné opony zaujímaly slavné osobnosti, zejména sportovci. Autorka vychází ze skutečných faktů, týkajících se života slavné rumunské sportovní gymnastky, není však biografií, jak by se na první pohled mohlo zdát. We Are the Birds of the Coming Storm is a wild novel that oscillates between fiction and reality. The story centers on two young women: Voltairine, a dancer who no longer dances but whose body is still haunted by the movement of dance, and her soulmate Emile, a young woman recovering from unexpected cardiac arrest. The girls are inseparable, and both their lives have been shattered by the horrors of rape. The opening of the dreamlike novel sets a bleak stage as Voltairine watches Emile lying in a hospital bed, her temperature dropping to dangerous levels. Voltairine is filled with sorrow and faces the blunt reality that her soulmate is going to die, chronicling each minute in her diary. However, Emile ultimately survives the attack. Later, at the cinémathèque , Voltairine and Emile meet a young girl whom they call “the little girl at the end of the lane,” who is obsessed by the Haymarket Affair of 1886. She’s an odd girl, obsessed with words, scribbling pages of notes throughout the movie screenings. She helps draw the pair out of their state of painful helplessness, and eventually the trio openly rebels against the newly elected oppressive regime of barbarian kings who rule their society. We Are the Birds of the Coming Storm explores repression, revolt, and madness, telling a story that is not only revolutionary but also cautionary—of three women who let their spirits fly like birds as the daunting storm ascends.

Podle autorky, jež přebírá sto let starou teorii doktora Mosese Blainea, může totiž pobyt poblíž vodopádů způsobit šílenství, což by mohlo vysvětlit záhadnou sebevraždu jistého Gilberta Erskina, který se ráno po svatební noci vrhne do vodního víru. Záhy se zjistí, že Erskinova novomanželka Ariah měla sexuální apetit poněkud silnější než Gilbert očekával. Po nějaké době se Ariah vrací na místo činu s novým manželem a čtenáře okamžitě napadne: kdopak se půjde podívat k vodopádům teď?

Ce livre est le fruit d'un appel lancé par Patrick Chamoiseau et Michel Le Bris pour un meilleur accueil des migrants en France, lors du Festival Étonnants Voyageurs en 2017. Vingt-six écrivains ont répondu en envoyant nouvelles, poèmes, témoignages et essais. Les contributions de Lola Lafon, Chantal Thomas, Mathias Énard, et d'autres, explorent des récits de migrations, d'exils, de familles brisées et d'espoirs, parfois avec humour, comme dans "Mots en fuite" de Tahar Ben Jelloun, où des mots étrangers quittent le dictionnaire en signe de protestation. Léonora Miano offre une vision d'anticipation en 2086, abordant un choc de civilisations. D'autres textes évoquent des violences et des barbaries, notamment ceux de JMG Le Clézio et Patrick Boucheron, posant la question de ce que nous sommes prêts à faire pour rester humains. Le livre se termine sur une note d'espoir avec le Manifeste de Mireille Delmas-Marty et la Déclaration des poètes de Patrick Chamoiseau, plaidoyers pour une hospitalité transformée. De schrijfster realiseert zich dat Anne Frank en 'Het Achterhuis' een verhaal vormen dat zo wereldwijd bekend is geworden dat eigenlijk niemand het meer kent. Het is getransformeerd in een of meerdere mythes die de werkelijkheid vervormen of overschaduwen. Is Anne Frank een verhaal van hoop? Is haar dagboek een getuigenis of misschien toch eerder het manuscript van een ambitieuze jonge schrijfster? De leegte die de museumbezoeker kan ervaren, bestaat niet echt. Lafon komt daar achter tijdens haar nacht waarin het nodige tot leven komt in het Achterhuis.
