This open access book offers a comprehensive analysis of the Dutch paper industry spanning six centuries, addressing a resurgence of scholarly interest in paper production. It explores the factors that contributed to the industry's longevity within the context of colonial, trade, merchant, and family networks that were essential for paper production and trade in early modern Europe. The book examines the Dutch paper industry through four phases of capitalism: the rise of Dutch capitalism (1580-1815), Dutch monarchic liberalism (1815-1914), Fordism (1914-1980), and post-Fordism (1980 to present). Each chapter delves into technological advancements alongside critical dimensions such as state-industry relations, labor-capital relations, and competition and cooperation. This multifaceted approach illustrates how the industry adapted to and thrived amid evolving national and global networks. The work is relevant to scholars in economic and business history, industrial history, political economy, and management studies. Additionally, it highlights the support received from the Publication Fund for Open Access Monographs of the Federal State of Brandenburg, Germany.
