V létě roku 1852 se z vesnice uprostřed hlubokých lesů v severním Švédsku začaly ztrácet mladé dívky. Jedna je nalezena mrtvá, jiná těžce poraněná. Místní rychtář má podezření, že v okolí se potuluje krvežíznivý medvěd, a vypíše na jeho ulovení odměnu. Děj je zasazen do současnosti, zejména do Tornedalenu, pohraniční oblasti obývané rázovitou finskou národnostní menšinou. Několik odboček však zavede čtenáře i do Stockholmu. Text je pro autora typický svým nezaměnitelným nábojem. Mrzoutský důchodce Martin Udde je nalezen mrtev ve svém domě – byl zavražděn skutečně netradičním způsobem. Místní policie je posílena půvabnou Terezou Fosnessovou ze Stockholmu, která vede vyšetřování. Podezření záhy padne na Esaiase Vanhakoskiho, který bez okolků doznává, že Uddeho nenáviděl. Příběh se však postupně rozvíjí v mnohem košatější útvar, než bývá u běžných detektivek zvykem. Líčí lásku Terezy a Esaiase, zamýšlí se nad nezbytností jazykových a kulturních kořenů a nad tím, co se stane, když je o ně člověk připraven, takže výsledkem je pozoruhodná výpověď o pokusu zničit tornedalskou finštinu – zábavná a vážná zároveň, a navíc naprosto jedinečná.

V severním Švédsku celý podzim stále prší a v řekách stále stoupá voda.
