Patrně nejslavnější dílo jednoho z nejlepších francouzských komiksových tvůrců je ve světě komiksu tím, čím je první světové válce (i válce obecně) Na západní frontě klid nebo Barbussův Oheň. Jacques Tardi, kterému o „Velké válce“ v raném dětství vyprávěli prarodiče, o ní napsal a nakreslil řadu děl, ve kterých ale na rozdíl od románů využívá toho, že se může víc opřít o obrazovou stránku. Tady nečekejte žádné hlavní hrdiny, kompozici, jednotu místa a děje, zápletky, nic podobného: zato syrovou chuť strachu, smrti a bezmoci, jakou se v podobné naléhavosti podařilo ze zákopů první světové války do našeho světa přenést málokomu.
