Děj se odehrává v Sovětském svazu v období let 1930–1946 a začíná v zimě roku 1930 v zapadlé tatarské vesničce, ve které žije obyčejným životem třicetiletá tatarská žena Zulejka. Její svět tvoří její hrubiánský muž a starost o hospodářství, jiný život nezná, a tak ho považuje za dobrý, zvykla si na něj. Proto když dochází k rozkulačení a její muž Murtaza je při potyčce s rudým komisařem zastřelen a ona s dalšími kulaky poslána na Sibiř, stýská se jí po minulém těžkém, ale srozumitelném životě. Román se stal literární událostí v Rusku i v zahraničí a v současné době se překládá do dvaceti čtyř jazyků.

Petrovitsj is een in verloedering geraakte schrijver die huisoppas is in een typische sovjetwoonkazerne. Een treurig gebouw met eindeloze, troosteloze gangen. Hij is schrijver een draagbare typemachine behoort tot de schaarse bezittingen die hij overal met zich meesleept. Weer wordt hij niet opgepakt, maar zijn geestelijke toestand wordt steeds slechter en uiteindelijk komt hij in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis terecht. Daar treft hij zijn jonhge broer Venja, ooit een briljant schilder. Als herboren verlaat Petrovitsj het ziekenhuis om na vele omzwervingen weer in zijn oude flatgebouw terecht te komen.
