The Higher International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE) English as a Second Language Module 2 is the second in a set of three books developed by the Cambridge Open Learning Project (COLP) in South Africa. The Project aims to provide access to quality education by producing course materials to support the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) English as a second language syllabus for HIGCSE. The HIGCSE examinations are available through the Southern Africa office of UCLES, based in Cape Town.

The outcomes-based approach encourages students to give their own ideas and interpretations. Modules are divided into units each of which can be completed in one study period. Self assessment activities reinforce learning. Check Your Progress exercises help learners measure their progress. The modules cater for distance learners and face-to face learners alike. Glossary boxes, unit summaries, answers to questions and end-of-module assignments all facilitate the learning process. Real-life case studies from Southern Africa are included.
