The Life and Works of Louis de Wet

Louis de Wet (1930-2018), an artist-philosopher from South Africa, created a remarkable collection of drawings and paintings, employing Old Masters' techniques to reflect a contemporary world. This publication, written by his wife Gabrielle Drake, compiles de Wet's complete works alongside biographical details and memories from those who knew him. In 1983, de Wet and his wife purchased Wenlock Abbey in Shropshire, an eleventh-century priory, which he dedicated himself to restoring over thirty-five years. He believed that the past should inform the future, and his artistic vision flourished within the abbey's walls. De Wet enhanced the abbey with his artworks, including frescoes of biblical figures in the chapel and uniquely designed carved capitals for an oak screen, each representing significant places in his life. The book is structured around these capitals and the locations de Wet lived—Africa, London, Paris, and Wenlock Abbey. Each section features images of the capitals, biographical insights from Gabrielle, and reproductions of his works from those periods, including facsimiles of his Parisian sketchbook and paint color book. Contributions from local historian Vivien Bellamy, architect Andrew Arrol, and Christophe Voros, Director of the Fédération des Sites Clunisiens, provide additional context and reflections on de Wet's extraordinary vision.
