Ve své detektivce pro děti nás Henry Winterfeld zavádí do starého Říma. Na chrámové zdi se objeví hanlivý nápis a ze zločinu znesvěcení je obviněn dvanáctiletý Rufus. Policie syna slavného generála uvězní, chlapci hrozí strašlivý trest - useknutí obou rukou. Jeho šest spolužáků z proslavené Xantovy školy však věří v Rufovu nevinu a snaží se přijít celé záležitosti na kloub. Pomáhá jim i jejich přísný učitel, s jehož pomocí dokáží chlapci tajemnou záhadu vyřešit poté, co najdou i přesvědčivé důkazy svědčící o Rufově nevině.
