Robert Gerwarth je profesor evropských dějin se zaměřením na německé dějiny. Po ukončení postdoktorandského stipendia British Academy na Oxfordské univerzitě působil jako stipendista na Princetonské a Harvardské univerzitě, v NIOD v Amsterdamu a v Institutu pokročilých studií na University of Western Australia.
Ačkoli byl Reinhard Heydrich jednou z nejobávanějších vůdčích postav Třetí říše – šéf Hlavního úřadu říšské bezpečnosti, zastupující protektor v Protektorátu Čechy a Morava, jeden z hlavních strůjců tzv. konečného řešení židovské otázky –, komplexní monografie o něm jsou vzácné. Kniha líčí Heydrichův vzestup z prostředí privilegované střední vrstvy až k vrcholné kariéře masového vraha, vrhá nové světlo na jeho charakter, odkrývá nenápadné kroky, jimiž se mění osobnost v monstrum, a mapuje souvislosti konkrétního zla s ideologickou představou nacistů o novém evropském pořádku.
V první světové válce nikdo nezvítězil a všichni byli poraženi. Po jejím skončení 11. listopadu 1918 sice západní spojenci slavili, ale mocné státy Německo, Rakousko-Uhersko a osmanská říše se ocitly na kolenou. Pro mnohé však válka skončila jen na pohled. Malé nástupnické státy čelily nejistotě, revolucím, pogromům a etnickým konfliktům, které vedly k devastaci kontinentu daleko hlubší než válečné boje. V ruinách Evropy se objevila hrozba fašismu a dalších extrémních ideologií, které brzy získaly na síle.
