Naivní hrdina hry, mladý lékař Trench je pohoršen, když zjistí, že jmění jeho snoubenky Blanche Sartoriové pochází z nekalých zisků jejího ovdovělého otce, který v sešlých domech na periférii vybírá přemrštěné nájemné. Když však zjistí, že i jeho bezpracná renta pochází z kapitálu, který do Sartoriova podniku vložila jeho rodina, změní názor a zapojí se aktivně do podnikání svého tchána. Komedie se odehrává během americké války za nezávislost. Hrdina Dick je pohoršen náboženským pokrytectvím ostatních Američanů, a tak se připojí k ďáblovi. Pak ale Britové během britsko-americké války zajmou Dicka namísto faráře, jehož je hostem, a on neprotestuje. Během soudního zasedání tepe britskou justici a koncept trestu, nesympatizuje ani s generálem, jenž se stal vůči britskému impériu cynickým. Farář zatím shromáždí muže z okolí a soudní síň oblehne, poté si s hrdinou vymění role – Dick za něj převezme kazatelnu a farář se stává americkým kapitánem ve válce proti Britům.

Politická komedie o paradoxech britské demokracie i angloamerických vztahů.

Burleskní komedie, která je uznávána za nejmarxističtější ze Shawových her. Je založena na konfliktu cynického kapitalisty-zbrojaře a jeho dcery, exaltované idealistky-majorky Armády spásy.
