Rien d'étonnant à cela, puisqu'ils sont, tous deux, des géants. Mais pas des géants infréquentables comme on en rencontre souvent. Au contraire, eux sont d'excellente compagnie, débonnaires, ouverts au progrès, curieux de tout et, surtout, toujours prêts à rire et à faire rire.

Mais c'est aussi un texte sur la religion : Rabelais attaque les superstitions, le culte du pape, les vices du clergé, les prétentions de la Curie romaine. Il condamne, dans cette Odyssée allégorique, toutes les Eglises, au profit de la liberté de l'Esprit. La galerie de monstres que l'on parcourt dans un prodigieux carnaval symbolise en même temps un combat politique et religieux, de son temps et de tous les temps.
