Kratší novela, odehrávající se těsně po revoluci v Rusku. Slavný lékař nalezne na ulici zbídačeného psa, ujme se ho a začne o něj pečovat. Protože však rád experimentuje s lékařskou vědou, provede pokus i na psovi, jenž se posléze začne pozvolna měnit v člověka.. Bulgakov novelu napsal počátkem roku 1925, nicméně poprvé byla v autorově vlasti otištěna až v roce 1987. Text ležel do té doby v archívech a šířily se jen neurčité zvěsti o jeho obsahu.

Psychologický román o občanské válce v Rusku. Bulgakov zasadil děj románu do rodného města Kyjev ve chvíli, kdy se politická i společenská situace měnila prakticky každý den, a tak rodina Turbinových, ale nejen ona, musela nutně dospět k přehodnocení názorů a postojů, vycházejících z jejich původu a založení. Knihu napsal v letech 1924-1925, neprošla však tehdejší cenzurou, vydána tak byla až v roce 1966 v době relativního uvolnění politických poměrů v SSSR.
