V roce 1683 se dvě mocnosti – Osmanská říše s centrem v Konstantinopoli a vídeňští Habsburkové – střetly ve vrcholné bitvě zápasu o moc, který trval 250 let: při velkém obléhání Vídně. Vzpomínka na Turky, s nimiž je starodávný a hluboký strach Západu ze všeho východního neoddělitelně spojen, zůstává živá a mocná. Turci usilovali o dobytí Vídně od prvního obléhání v roce 1529. Autor dokazuje, že to je politováníhodné zjednodušení: během čtyř staletí boje o nadvládu byl Západ útočící stranou stejně často jako Východ. Dnešní, moderní Turecko se snaží změnit svou orientaci směrem k Evropě; proti tomuto trendu se však staví nová generace politiků, kteří dovedou zbytky napětí mezi Východem a Západem mistrovsky využít.
