Již třetí výbor z tvorby výlučného francouzského romantika Charlese Nodiera (1770–1844) zahrnuje prózu Jedna hodina aneb Vidění (1806), kde se u Nodiera vůbec poprvé objevuje motiv duševně vyšinutého jedince; povídku Jean François Modrá punčocha (1833) jako ranou vzpomínku na mladého génia, který se „zbláznil z přílišné přemoudřelosti“; moralitu Paul aneb Podobnost (1836) s motivem dvojníka a rozsáhlejší novelu Slečna de Marsan (1832), kde vypravěč vzpomíná na účast v činnosti tajné italské společnosti i na platonickou lásku k slečně de Marsan, jež dramaticky spojila svůj osud s ušlechtilým bojem národů proti Napoleonovým výbojům. Próza v kulisách polorozpadlého šlechtického sídla prokletého rodu Cenciů, kde podle ústní tradice řádí nečisté síly, má v nodierovské tradici zcela racionální vyústění.

Tři ukázky z Nodierova prozaického díla pocházejí z třicátých let 19. století, kdy v autorově tvorbě převládají fantastické náměty, jako je tomu v Úvalu mrtvého muže. S rozpoutanými živly, jež blížící se dies irae dramaticky ohlašují, se setkáme i v Inés de Las Sierass (1837), jež byla nepochybně předobrazem Vernovy Stilly v románu Tajemný hrad v Karpatech. Próza Devítník bývá vnímána jako snový protějšek Inés, jejíž námět Nodier vytěžil z cesty do Španělska v roce 1827. Autor zde ilustuje názor, že základním úkolem umělce je zůstat za všech okolností sám sebou, vytvářet iluzi, a nikoli hledat pravdu.

Charles Nodier (1780–1844) byl všestranný spisovatel, který – odkojen německým a anglickým romantismem – pomáhal novému směru razit cestu do Francie. Krušné zážitky z doby revolučního teroru a tragické ztráty v okruhu jeho blízkých ovlivnily pesimistické ladění jeho tvorby, ze které nejvýrazněji vystupují zejména povídky a novely s tajemnými náměty, v nichž hraje rozhodující úlohu zjitřená představivost jejich hrdinů, jež posouvá možnost výkladu jednotlivých příběhů k nečekaným a mnohovrstevnatým obzorům. Kniha obsahuje pět próz Krajina snů, Mora aneb Démoni noci, Slepci ze Chamouny, Baptiste Montauban a Lydie aneb Zmrtvýchvstání.

Do fantastického prostředí východních zemí umístěná pohádka o čtyřech bratřích. Tři z nich dostali zázračné talismany, které jim měly přinést bohatství a štěstí, ale lehkomyslně promarnili svěřené jim dary. Čtvrtý, nejmladší z nich, nedostal sice nic, ale vypracoval se vlastní prací a vlídně otevřel svůj dům i bratřím, kteří skončili jako žebráci.

Nodierův román Janez Žbogar, poprvé vydaný roku 1818 z politických důvodů anonymně, sehrál nezaměnitelnou úlohu v procesu utvářejícího se francouzského romantismu 20. a 30. let 19. století. Jako první v národní literatuře v něm autor představil postavu psance, vzdorujícího nespravedlivému společenskému uspořádání. Žbogar alias Lothario je ilyrský zbojník a benátský šlechtic v jedné osobě, v podstatě nešťastný člověk, jehož čeká tragický osud na popravišti. Je na podiv, že se román za celá dvě století, jež uplynula od jeho vzniku, vychází v českém překladu poprvé.
