V prvé se vypráví o osudech Cligésova otce před narozením syna. Druhá část, hlavní jádro celého románu, je milostným příběhem Cligése a Fenície, milenců, kteří se po zdolání mnoha protivenství a dramatických dobrodružství šťastně dostanou. Příběh, který se odehrává v Cařihradu, Anglii, Řecku a Německu, zavádí nás do středověké šlechtické společnosti.

Taking the legends surrounding King Arthur and weaving in new psychological elements of personal desire and courtly manner, Chrétien de Troyes fashioned a new form of medieval Romance. The Knight of the Cart is the first telling of the adulterous relationship between Lancelot and Arthur's Queen Guinevere, and in The Knight with the Lion Yvain neglects his bride in his quest for greater glory. Erec and Enide explores a knight's conflict between love and honour, Cligés exalts the possibility of pure love outside marriage, while the haunting The Story of the Grail chronicles the legendary quest. Rich in symbolism, these evocative tales combine closely observed detail with fantastic adventure to create a compelling world that profoundly influenced Malory, and are the basis of the Arthurian legends we know today.

Le roman raconte l’histoire de Perceval, jeune homme devenu depuis peu un chevalier redoutable, ayant pour but la recherche du Graal. Le jeune Gallois Perceval vit avec sa mere dans une foret. Il ignore tout du monde des chevaliers car sa mere, qui a déja perdu son mari et deux de ses fils au combat, le protege. Cependant, un jour le jeune homme rencontre une troupe de chevaliers. Tout de suite, le Gallois souhaite devenir comme eux, un preux chevalier. Son reve est d’aller a la cour du Roi Arthur et de le servir. Pour cela, il doit affronter des guerriers et échapper aux pieges qu’il rencontre sur sa route. Nevie nič o svete rytierov a ochrane matky, ktorá už v boji stratila muža a dvoch synov. Jedného dňa však stretne skupinku rytierov. Walesan sa chce stať statočným rytierom, akými sú oni. Jeho snom je dostať sa na dvor kráľa Artuša a slúžiť mu. Aby sa mu to podarilo, musí čeliť bojovníkom a uniknúť nástrahám, ktoré ho na ceste čakajú.

Lancelot ou le Chevalier de la Charrette was composed in the late 12th century by Chrétien de Troyes and finished by Godefroi de Lagny (from the text: «Le clerc Godefroi de Lagny a achevé La Charrette. It was finished around 1180 (sources: The Princeton Charrette Project at Princeton University and The Charrette Project 2 at Baylor University) This poem was the first to introduce Lancelot as one of the leading figures in the King Arthur legend. It describes the adulterous relationship between Lancelot and Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur - and the willingness of Lancelot to submit to the humiliation of being transported in the cart, the shameful vehicle used to carry men to their death on the gallows, in order to discover news of the abducted Queen Guinevere.
