Po získání doktorátu z biologie si Catherine Ravenová postavila malou chatu v odlehlém koutu Montany. Tou dobou žila v izolaci nejen fyzické, ale i citové. Nach ihrer Promotion in Biologie kauft die amerikanische Autorin ein Grundstück in den Wäldern Montanas und baut sich dort eine Blockhütte. Da kann sie stundenlang im Freien sitzen und in aller Ruhe die verschiedensten Tiere, wie Elstern, Wühlmäuse, Fledermäuse, Rebhühner und Hirschkühe, aber auch Pflanzen beobachten. Kontakt zu Menschen hat sie kaum, aber das stört sie nicht. Eines Tage legt sich in junger Fuchs zwei Meter von ihr entfernt ins Gras und es beginnt eine wunderbare Freundschaft zwischen beiden.
