Všechny šťastné rodiny jsou si podobné, každá nešťastná rodina je nešťastná po svém. Výmluvný postřeh giganta ruského realistického románu Lva Nikolajeviče Tolstého otevírá jedno z nejslavnějších psychologických děl v dějinách literatury, v němž si spisovatel po monumentální fresce Vojna a mír dopřál komornější zápletku a dalekosáhlým přetvořením látek módních romancí vyjádřil odpor k pseudomorálce „vyšších kruhů".
