Paris-based Martin Szekely (*1956) is one of the most acclaimed designers of his generation, working simultaneously for the industry—with international companies such as Nestlé, Heineken, and Hermès—on private commissions, and on limited-production creations. Since the beginning of the 1980s, his work has developed as a „return to the source“ of furniture, deploying an aesthetic drawn from the reduction of gestures and attention to materials, rather than through a form of minimalism, with which it is often associated. Combining cutting-edge technology with conceptual simplicity, he uses materials such as concrete and wood, cork and marble. This monograph, one of the rare books about Martin Szekely, puts together an essay by French art critic Elisabeth Lebovici alongside unpublished notes by the designer. More than 200 images (installation views, close-ups, drawings) offer a complete overview on his work. * * Published with Galerie kreo, Paris.
A Living Museum Space - The Vienna State Opera Safety Curtain
This volume documents the long-term initiative 'Safety Curtain' of Museum in progress, a project that is unique in the world. The exhibition series in the Vienna State Opera has represented a symbolic interface between performance and visual arts since 1998. It also creates a link between thorny historical questions and contemporary ways to address them. Beyond the actual curtain images that have originated over the years an associative and sensuous view to further related works of the participating artists in several different media forms is presented. The art project 'Safety Curtain', because of its exceptional quality, its year-long existence and its unusual dimension of 175 m² is singular and enables a distinctive perspective of art history of the past twenty years.
Well known for her sober sculptures and photographic meditations, Roni Horn (born 1955) has spent the last 30 years developing a body of work that explores the complex relationship between the viewer and the visual experience. The artist frequently installs a single piece on opposing walls or in adjoining rooms, or conversely mounts a series of closely related images in succession, as a vehicle for investigating the issues of doubling and identical experience that inform her overall practice. This volume is published for Horn's second exhibition at Kukje Gallery in Seoul and presents over 15 works ranging from photographic installations to sculptures and drawings. It includes her most recent series such as Portrait of an Image (with Isabelle Huppert) and Through 6 , plus installation shots from important exhibitions throughout the world. Accompanying the many exquisite reproductions is an insightful essay by noted critic and curator Elisabeth Lebovici.
