I LEGO N.Y. is an imaginative look at life in New York City constructed entirely out of LEGOs. Designer and illustrator Christoph Niemann was inspired to create a series of miniature New York vignettes out of his sons' toys after a few cold and dark winter days in Berlin. The former New Yorker then posted photographs of his creations along with his handwritten captions on his New York Times blog. Resident and honorary New Yorkers around the world responded enthusiastically to the clever and minimalist inventions, which captured both the iconic (the Empire State Building) and the mundane (man standing on a subway platform) in fewer LEGO pieces than one might think possible. This book includes all of the original images, plus thirteen new creations. The resulting collection is delightful in its simplicity and moving in its ability to cature the spirit of life in New York in so few strokes. Also available from Christoph Abstract City and Sunday Sketching .
Christoph Niemann pairs 300 key sight words from the Fry list with engaging illustrations, enhancing the learning experience for readers of all ages. This innovative approach aims to deepen understanding of English reading and writing, making it accessible and enjoyable for both children and adults. The combination of visual art and vocabulary promotes a more enriching educational journey.
In July 2008, illustrator and designer Christoph Niemann began Abstract City, a visual blog for the New York Times. His posts were inspired by the desire to re-create simple and everyday observations and stories from his own life that everyone could relate to. In Niemann's hands, mundane experiences such as riding the subway or trying to get a good night's sleep were transformed into delightful flights of visual fancy. The struggle to keep up with housework became a battle against adorable but crafty goblins, and nostalgia about New York manifested in simple but strikingly spot-on LEGO creations. This brilliantly illustrated collection of reflections on modern life includes all 16 of the original blog posts as well as a new chapter created exclusively for the book.
Speed. Color. Sound. Numbers. Maps. Connections. Navigation. Subway systems may be specific to certain cities around the world, but the pure thrill of a subway ride is universal to all young children. Christoph Niemann’s graphically elegant and playful picture book is a tour de force for preschoolers and a stellar addition to the canon of books about trains, trucks, planes, and automobiles. Based on the author’s own underground adventures with his young boys—chronicled for adult readers in Niemann’s New York Times blog, Abstract City—this innovative picture book is an invitation down underground, where a system of trains and tracks delivers millions of riders to their destinations each day. “Underneath the city is this beautifully simple system of letters, numbers, and colors. The trains and stations are huge and impressive but also comforting, because nothing ever changes. My boys are in charge; they can read the signs, navigate the grid, and they always know what happens next.”—Christoph Niemann
Meet Lin and her pet dragon! When the dragon mysteriously disappears, Lin sets off on a journey to find her best friend . . . and readers set off on a journey of learning and discovery. By ingeniously integrating written Chinese characters into the illustrations as the story progresses, Christoph Niemann has created a book that is engrossing, unique, and memorable. The Pet Dragon is a playful introduction to the fascinating world of Chinese language and culture . . . and a terrific story to share with children everywhere. You are invited to join Lin for an adventure you will not soon forget!
A wrapped present. A curious young girl. A whole wide world of possibility. What would you wish for? From internationally renowned artist and designer Christoph Niemann, I wish is a universal and timeless celebration of anticipation and the limitless power of the imagination. I wish will inspire fans of Kobi Yamada’s What Do You Do with an Idea? and Suzy Lee’s Wave . When a young girl finds a wrapped present, she wonders what’s inside. In her imagination, the gift becomes anything she’s ever wished a fashionable pair of shoes, a pony to ride, and even wings to help her fly. As the girl’s anticipation expands and her imagination soars, so does the gift’s ability to surprise her and to transform itself into even greater and more meaningful things. Using an appealing limited color palette and wordless pages, award-winning artist Christoph Niemann challenges readers to think, laugh, imagine, and embrace the possibilities. I wish is an elegant and unique gift for any occasion and invites sharing and repeated readings. A must-have for readers of all ages. If you could have anything, what would you wish for?
How do things work? Hmmm. Let me think. That's How! Christoph Niemann invites you to look below the surface in this visual exploration of the way things work. Turns out there is more to it than meets the eye!
