Ulli Beier byl zakladatelem klubů Mbari a editorem časopisu Black Orpheus, který se zaměřoval na africké umění a literaturu. Jeho práce se soustředila na překlad africké poezie, zejména z jazyka Jorubů, a na zkoumání afrických mýtů a umění. Beier se věnoval popularizaci africké kultury pro širší publikum.
