Oblibu příběhu lze jistě hledat v napínavosti a exkluzívnosti děje, ale spočívá především v postavě hrdiny, v tom, jaksi vedl v mezní životní situaci. Člověk, který v těžké chvíli zachová rozvahu, houževnatý, pracovitý, odvážný, nezdolně optimistický, člověk s aktivním přístupem k životu. Josef V. Pleva převyprávěl příběh se zřetelem k současnému čtenáři. Robinson v jeho podání se nejen dovede postarat sám o sebe na pustém ostrově, ale také řeší srážky s domorodci pokud možno bez prolití krve nebo jedná velkoryse se zajatými piráty.
