Do této největší krabičky, odehrávající se v rovině přítomnosti, vložil Vargas Llosa řadu dalších krabiček, kde se čtenář především prostřednictvím dialogů a vnitřních monologů seznamuje se Santiagovou rodinou včetně služebných, s jeho kamarády ze čtvrti, se spolužáky na Univerzitě sv. Marka, s jeho láskami, s novinářskými kolegy i současnou manželkou; přes postavu Santiagova otce senátora pak s politiky a jejich rodinami a milenkami. Šofér Ambrosio slouží jako partner v debatě, který svými otázkami spouští Santiagovy vzpomínky.

Předposlední román Vargase Llosy z roku 2000 znovu nalézá strhující rytmus a spád autorových nejlepších románů dokonale propojujících skutečnost (historické události) s fikcí. Urania Cabralová se po pětatřiceti letech vrací domů do Dominikánské republiky, kde se chce konečně vypořádat s minulostí. Na kraji silnice však číhají večer v autě čtyři ozbrojení muži. Slavný peruánský spisovatel z těchto dvou situací splétá mnohovrstevný, krutý a místy až tragikomický příběh dominikánského diktátora Rafaela Leonidase Trujilla řečeného Kozel. Kde končí nedotknutelný Vůdce a začíná obyčejný člověk? Jak může rozmar jednoho muže zničit životy tisíců lidí?

Na výpravě za epickým dějem Vargas Llosa opouští tentokrát Peru a inspirován bezprostředním svědectvím brazilského novináře a spisovatele Euclidese da Cunhy se vrací k dramatickým událostem v odlehlých pustinách severovýchodní Brazílie, k nimž došlo pár let před koncem minulého století. Tuhá kázeň, vojenská disciplína a tvrdost většiny nadřízených zrovna tak jako vzájemná krutost chlapců, mezi kterými obstojí jen silný jedinec, vedou až k tragické a nevysvětlené smrti studenta. Kniha mladého peruánského spisovatele, která nese mnoho biografických prvků, vyvolala velký ohlas a byla přeložena do mnoha jazyků. Město s rázovitým předměstím Mangacherií na okraji peruánské pouště, kde se večer co večer snáší písečný déšť a stíny neslyšně kloužou k osvětleným oknům Zeleného domu, nevěstince, odkud se občas ozývají tklivé tóny harfy, i to je Piura v jednom okamžiku svých dějin, v dobách následujících po příjezdu tajemného cizince dona Anselma. Piura je však i město s moderními třídami, kam sotvakdy zabloudí slepý harfeník Anselmo a jeho nerozluční přátelé Mladík Alejandro a Chlapák nebo čtveřice povalečů, kteří se hrdě nazývají frájové. Na východ odtud, za hřebeny And, se potom rozkládá „zelené peklo“ tropického pralesa v povodí Maraňonu, jednoho z přítoků Amazonky, kde dosud domorodí Huambisové, Aguarunové a Shaprové žijí na úrovni doby kamenné, třebaže v jejich blízkosti rachotí motorové čluny obchodníků, vojáků a policistů, ale i lidí prchajících před zákonem. Do těchto dvou míst nás zavádí autor ve svém složitém, mnohovrstevném toku vyprávění, aby na pestré mozaice lidských osudů zachytil příběhy Indiána Juma, kdysi obávaného Japonce Fushíi či bývalé klášterní chovanky Bonifacie a seržanta, kteří mohou, ale nemusí být totožní s piurskou nevěstkou Divoškou a povalečem Litumou.

Románem Pantaleón a jeho ženská rota pronikl Mario Vargas Llosa k nejširším čtenářským vrstvám. V této humorné próze spisovatel předkládá příběh mladého a spolehlivého důstojníka, který si při plnění svěřeného úkolu – vybudování pojízdného nevěstince pro vyhladovělé vojáky v amazonských pralesích – počíná tak horlivě, že ohrozí prestiž nedotknutelné armády, a ve chvíli, kdy činnost „své“ ženské roty dovádí k dokonalosti, musí být raději odstraněn… Satirický román si bere na mušku byrokratické řízení armády i pokryteckou morálku celé společnosti. Dílo bylo dvakrát zfilmováno (1975, 2010) – v prvním případě se autor přímo podílel na vzniku snímku (režie J. M. Gutiérrez) a dokonce si v něm zahrál jednu z důstojnických rolí.

Flora Tristánová a Paul Gauguin. Dvě osobnosti, které zavrhly měšťácké pohodlí a jistoty a jejichž údělem se stalo hledání ráje. Dva revolucionáři, kteří urputně a bezohledně šli za svým ideálem. Dva vizionáři, kteří za svůj sen neváhali položit život. V románu Ráj je až za rohem žijící klasik hispanoamerické literatury Mario Vargas Llosa líčí životní osudy legendárního francouzského malíře a jeho u nás méně známé babičky, jež byla významnou sociální reformátorkou a předchůdkyní levicového feminismu, a nabízí tak mnohovrstevnatý pohled na téma utopií v 19. století. A vzdává mimo jiné hold své vlasti, neboť společné kořeny obou hrdinů se nacházejí v Peru.

Poslední román držitele Nobelovy ceny za literaturu pro rok 2010 obsahuje v kostce všechna autorova oblíbená témata. Čtenář se s hlavním hrdinou Rogerem Casementem, britským diplomatem irského původu, dostane nejprve do Konga v době kaučukové horečky, vzápětí do Amazonie počátku století, v době první světové války pak bude přihlížet prvním pokusům o získání irské nezávislosti. Roger Casement, skutečná (a značně polemická) historická postava, byl jako britský konzul vyslán do Konga a posléze do Amazonie s pověřením napsat zprávu o skutečném stavu kaučukových plantáží, kde docházelo k nelidskému vykořisťování domorodců. Jeho zpráva obletěla svět a přispěla ke zlepšení pracovních podmínek. Kvůli své angažovanosti v boji za irskou nezávislost však byl Casement posléze Brity zadržen a popraven.

V této své nejvtipnější knize z roku 1977 se Vargas Llosa, už světově proslulý spisovatel, vrací do dob svého mládí, kdy pracoval v rozhlasové redakci v Limě a při tom stíhal několik dalších zaměstnání, aby si vydělal na živobytí. V osmnácti letech se tehdy bláznivě zamiloval do své daleko starší „tetičky“ a proti vůli rodiny se s ní oženil. Autobiograficky podložený příběh se v knize prolíná s fiktivními rozhlasovými seriály geniálního psavce Pedra Camacha, vypravěčova kolegy z rádia, což jsou s humorným nadhledem líčené barvité historky o zločinech, incestních láskách, šílenství a všemožných katastrofách. V závěru knihy pak obě linie splynou a rozesmátý čtenář neví, kdo je větší šílenec a jestli brakovou literaturu píše Camacho, nebo sám život.

V česky dosud nevydaném románu z roku 1987 se peruánský autor vrací k zážitku antropologické expedice do amazonského pralesa, který výrazně ovlivnil celou jeho tvorbu. Vzpomínky na léta studií na limské Univerzitě svatého Marka a na práci v televizi se prolínají se strhujícími pasážemi, kde Vargas Llosa mistrovsky napodobil styl indiánského „vypravěče“ kmene Mačigengů, který jako živá míza a tmelící prvek kmene obchází roztroušené mačigengské rodiny a vypráví jim dávné mýty, příběhy i drobné klepy z jejich každodenního života. Právě toto indiánské vyprávění patří k nejkrásnějším stránkám, jaké kdy Vargas Llosa napsal. Kosmogonie, legendy i všední příhody mizejícího amazonského kmene svou originalitou jistě osloví a dojmou i českého čtenáře.

Zatím poslední román Peruánce Maria Vargase Llosy Zlobivá holka se dá považovat za jakousi autorovu životní bilanci. V příběhu peruánského překladatele Ricarda Somocurcia, jehož jediným životním cílem je uchytit se natrvalo v Paříži a získat lásku jedné zlobivé holky, Vargas Llosa ve zkratce zachytil postupnou proměnu atmosféry a názorů západních intelektuálů ve druhé polovině 20. století. Ricardo prožívá klíčové události na stejných místech jako kdysi Vargas Llosa a všude se mu do cesty plete jedna malá nezdoba, zlobivá holka, kterou vypravěč tvrdošíjně miluje, ačkoli ona mu vyvádí samé nepěkné kousky.

V erotickém divertimentu Chvála macechy Vargas Llosa předvádí čtenáři nezvyklý milostný trojúhelník. Don Rigoberto vášnivě miluje svou druhou ženu Lucrecii, která jeho lásku s nadšenou oddaností opětuje, jenomže je tu ještě jeho synek z prvního manželství, nebesky krásné dítě s předčasnými erotickými zájmy. S ďábelsky andílkovskou nevinností nenápadně svádí Lucrecii, která neví, zda se pohoršovat, nebo dávat vinu sobě za to, že vidí hříšné myšlenky, kde je jen dětská hra. Čtrnáct milostných výjevů koresponduje s výtvarným doprovodem z Jacoba Jordaense, Françoise Bouchera, Tiziana, Francise Bacona, Fernanda de Szyszlo a Fra Angelica. Úředník pojišťovny don Rigoberto totiž nevychází jen z vlastních smyslných představ, ale inspiruje se v sexu též vlastní sbírkou grafických listů s dráždivou tematikou a svérázně si vykládá i klasická díla světového malířství. V pikantně pojatém rodinném příběhu reflektuje autor nejen odlišnosti v mužské a ženské sexualitě, nýbrž i to, jak vnímá a prosazuje své ego lidský jedinec v moderní otevřené společnosti.

Neúnavné hledačství Vargase Llosy na poli příběhu se projevuje i v jeho detektivním thrilleru s názvem Kdo zabil Palomina Molera? Příběh o lásce podaný formou grotesky a parodie vzbudil ihned po svém vydání v Peru velký ohlas. Milostný příběh se prolíná s popisem prohnilé společnosti, kterou prorůstá korupce, nedůvěra v justici a armádu. Toto velmi aktuální téma dokázal Mario Vargas Llosa zasadit do příběhu o smrti obyčejného peruánského vojáka. Detektivní příběh Kdo zabil Palomina Molera? je zatím poslední do češtiny přeloženou knihou Vargase Llosy, držitele Nobelovy ceny za literaturu z roku 2012.
