Na semaforu v jakémsi bezejmenném městě naskočí zelená. Jedno auto přesto zůstává na křižovatce stát,jeho řidič totiž znenadání oslepne. Ale namísto aby upadl do temnoty, vidí najednou vše bílé, jakoby byl v mlze nebo spadl do mléčného jezera. Pomocníka, který jej doveze domů a poté mu ukradne jeho auto, stihne tentýž osud. Během jediného dne oslepne nejen manželka prvního slepého, ale i taxikář, který pár vezl k lékaři, onen lékař, jeho pacienti i zloděj auta. Slepota se šíří jako epidemie a stát bezcitně zareaguje ve snaze zabránit panice. Slepí jsou izolováni v prázdné psychiatrické léčebně, kde jsou odkázáni jen sami na sebe, pod dohledem vojáků, kteří mají rozkaz střílet po každém, kdo se pokusí o útěk. V této společnosti slepých lidí je přesto jeden pár vidoucích očí – doktorova žena, která slepotu jen předstírá, aby mohla zůstat se svým manželem. Počet slepých narůstá, jejich azyl praská ve švech, a o to víc je problémů se zásobováním, hygienou a pohřbíváním mrtvých, kteří také přibývají. Je neodvratné, že se společenské konvence začínají rozpadat – jedna skupina slepých převezme kontrolu nad dodávkami potravin a používá je k vykořisťování ostatních. Mezitím se lékařova žena snaží ochraňovat svou malou skupinku slepých a nakonec je vyvede z karantény do venkovního světa, který se strašlivě proměnil. Společnost, jak ji znali, se téměř zhroutila. Vládne násilí, nemoci a strach, lidé jsou zoufalí...

Saramago se pro svůj román o sloním putování inspiroval skutečnou událostí. Zhruba v polovině 16. století se totiž portugalský král Jan III. rozhodl vyslat přes celou Evropu slona indického, který předtím dva roky strádal v zapomenutém koutě jeho lisabonského paláce. Měl se měl stát velkolepým svatebním darem pro jeho švagra, arcivévodu rakouského a mimo jiné i titulárního českého krále Maximiliána II. Habsburského. Příběh slona Šalamouna, který za doprovodu vojenské eskorty prochází přes prašné kastilské pláně až k pobřeží Středozemního moře, aby se po jeho vlnách přeplavil od italského Janova, odkud se přes zasněžené Alpy dostane až do Vídně, je především podobenstvím o lidském bláznovství. Ať už jde o šílené nápady mocných, které někdo musí uskutečnit, nebo o představy prostých lidí, kteří si během cesty do exotického tvora promítají všechno možné. Depois de muita insistência e de a muitas portas bater pelos meandros da burocracia real lá conseguiu que o rei lhe desse, finalmente, o tão desejado barco. A mulher da limpeza do palácio real foi a única tripulação que arranjou e, depois de apetrechado e limpo o barco, dormiram essa noite no cais. Ricardo Reis è uno degli "eteronimi" con cui Fernando Pessoa firmava le sue opere. José Saramago, con un'invenzione vertiginosa, dà a questo nome una storia e un vissuto, facendolo tornare a Lisbona nel 1935, anno della morte di Pessoa, e facendolo morire un anno dopo, giusto in tempo per visitare la tomba del suo creatore.
