Román Baltasar a Blimunda se odehrává v 18. století: dějištěm je portugalský královský dvůr stejně jako prostředí nejchudších vrstev. Skvěle zvládnutá historická látka (vystupují tu historické postavy a glosovány jsou různé události, jako například stavba františkánského kláštera v Mafře nebo sestrojení létajícího stroje) se míchá s fikcí v několika dějových liniích. Tou nejdůležitější je ale příběh velké lásky dvou titulních postav... Román přibližuje praktiky církve a inkvizice a velmi ironicky proti nim vystupuje. Na semaforu v jakémsi bezejmenném městě naskočí zelená. Jedno auto přesto zůstává na křižovatce stát,jeho řidič totiž znenadání oslepne. Ale namísto aby upadl do temnoty, vidí najednou vše bílé, jakoby byl v mlze nebo spadl do mléčného jezera. Pomocníka, který jej doveze domů a poté mu ukradne jeho auto, stihne tentýž osud. Během jediného dne oslepne nejen manželka prvního slepého, ale i taxikář, který pár vezl k lékaři, onen lékař, jeho pacienti i zloděj auta. Slepota se šíří jako epidemie a stát bezcitně zareaguje ve snaze zabránit panice. Slepí jsou izolováni v prázdné psychiatrické léčebně, kde jsou odkázáni jen sami na sebe, pod dohledem vojáků, kteří mají rozkaz střílet po každém, kdo se pokusí o útěk. V této společnosti slepých lidí je přesto jeden pár vidoucích očí – doktorova žena, která slepotu jen předstírá, aby mohla zůstat se svým manželem. Počet slepých narůstá, jejich azyl praská ve švech, a o to víc je problémů se zásobováním, hygienou a pohřbíváním mrtvých, kteří také přibývají. Je neodvratné, že se společenské konvence začínají rozpadat – jedna skupina slepých převezme kontrolu nad dodávkami potravin a používá je k vykořisťování ostatních. Mezitím se lékařova žena snaží ochraňovat svou malou skupinku slepých a nakonec je vyvede z karantény do venkovního světa, který se strašlivě proměnil. Společnost, jak ji znali, se téměř zhroutila. Vládne násilí, nemoci a strach, lidé jsou zoufalí...

Mladý muž zabil vlastního bratra. Za svůj čin byl potrestán vyhnanstvím a nesmazatelným znamením na čele. Muž se jmenoval Kain a jeho příběh je znám už přes dva tisíce let. Saramago se pro svůj román o sloním putování inspiroval skutečnou událostí. Zhruba v polovině 16. století se totiž portugalský král Jan III. rozhodl vyslat přes celou Evropu slona indického, který předtím dva roky strádal v zapomenutém koutě jeho lisabonského paláce. Měl se měl stát velkolepým svatebním darem pro jeho švagra, arcivévodu rakouského a mimo jiné i titulárního českého krále Maximiliána II. Habsburského. Příběh slona Šalamouna, který za doprovodu vojenské eskorty prochází přes prašné kastilské pláně až k pobřeží Středozemního moře, aby se po jeho vlnách přeplavil od italského Janova, odkud se přes zasněžené Alpy dostane až do Vídně, je především podobenstvím o lidském bláznovství. Ať už jde o šílené nápady mocných, které někdo musí uskutečnit, nebo o představy prostých lidí, kteří si během cesty do exotického tvora promítají všechno možné. Barvité líčení různých krajů a lidských mravů je zábavné a poučné zároveň.

Když byl Giono v roce 1953 požádán vydavatelem časopisu Reader’s Dígest, aby napsal příběh o nejpozoruhodnějším člověku, s nímž se kdy setkal, poslal mu tuto povídku, kterou chtěl vzbudit zájem o zalesňovací program. Vydavatel mu však z nepochopení příběh vrátil, a ten byl uveřejněn o rok později v časopise Vogue pod titulem „Muž, který sázel naději a vypěstoval štěstí“. V té době sám autor jistě netušil, že jeho próza, rozsahem nevelká, v celé řadě překladů záhy oběhne svět, a že navíc splní autorův záměr – stane se inspirací pro ochránce přírody k zalesňování celých oblastí. Dnes má tedy konečně i český čtenář možnost seznámit se s tímto skvostem, jenž se kromě řady francouzských i cizojazyčných vydání stal předlohou ke kanadskému animovanému filmu, který byl uveden i u nás.

«O Lagarto» é um conto breve incluído em A Bagagem do Viajante (1973), volume que reuniu as crónicas escritas por José Saramago para o diário A Capital e para o semanário Jornal do Fundão entre 1971 e 1972. A história narra o aparecimento no Chiado de um misterioso lagarto, cuja presença surpreende os transeuntes e mobiliza os bombeiros, o exército e a aviação. Num estilo claro e preciso, a fábula oferece uma pluralidade de sentidos capaz de cativar leitores de todas as idades. Esta edição conta ainda com as magníficas xilogravuras do mestre J. Borges.

José Saramago muestra lo importante que es el libro y la lectura en la vida de un ser humano. Hace comparaciones con la vida cotidiana, manifestando que la gente sólo saca excusas para explicar el porqué no leen, teniendo aún herramientas suficientes para lograr una buena lectura. Cuestiona también si la enseñanza refuerza como debería de ser la lectura y el amor por los libros, siendo ésta indispensable en la educación. Para dar solución a todas estas cuestiones de Saramago, es necesario detallar con atención sus explicaciones, pues da a entender que no es que no se pueda leer un libro, sino que no se quiere.

Si en "El Evangelio según Jesucristo" José Saramago nos dio su visión del Nuevo Testamento, en "Caín" regresa a los libros de la Biblia. En un intinerario heterodoxo, recorre ciudades decadentes y establos, palacios de tiranos y campos de batalla de la mano de los principales protagonistas del Antiguo Testamento, imprimiéndole la música y el humor refinado que caracterizan su obra. "Caín" pone de manifiesto lo que hay de moderno y sorprendente en la prosa de Saramago: la capacidad de hacer nueva una historia que se conoce de principio a fin.
