Tato kniha je hlavním románem George Sand, dílem její zralosti (1842), v němž odhaluje svá tajemství. Hrdinkou je cantatrice. První část se odehrává v Benátkách, je to hudební novela s milostným příběhem; druhá část je historický a fantastický román situovaný v Riesenburgu; třetí část, cestopisný a dobrodružný příběh, se zaměřuje na Vídeň, kde se odehrává i čtvrtá část, a také na Prahu, která mísí všechny předchozí prvky. Děj se odehrává mezi lety 1742 a 1755. Consuelo je nejprve vzrušujícím dobrodružným románem. Ale děj podporuje historické, sociální, politické, estetické a hudební myšlenky. Protagonistka je dívka z lidu, stejně jako autorka skrze svou matku. Prožije život obklopena muži, až do svého manželství s hrabětem z Rudolstadtu.

Tragický příběh mladého studenta práv Horáce ke krásné Martě. Sandová v něm oživuje citové, filozofické i hmotné starosti studentů v minulém století. Román se poněkud vymyká "Sandovskému" pojetí svými důkladně propracovanými charaktery.

„Cítil, jak mu někdo poklepal na rameno, a když se otočil, uviděl vnučku matky Fadet, kterou v kraji nazývali Malou Fadettkou, jak podle jejího příjmení, tak i proto, že si přáli, aby byla trochu čarodějnicí. Všichni víte, že fadet nebo farfadet, kterému jinde říkají také follet, je velmi milý, ale trochu zlomyslný skřítek. Také se fádami nazývají víly, kterým u nás už moc nevěříme. Ale ať už to znamenalo malou vílu, nebo samičku skřítka, každý, kdo ji viděl, si představoval, že vidí folleta, neboť byla tak malá, hubená, rozcuchaná a odvážná. Bylo to velmi upovídané a posměšné dítě, živé jako motýl, zvědavé jako červenka a černé jako hrachovka.“

Proti svému sklonu končit své románové příběhy idylou šťastného manželství dvou sociálně protikladných hrdinů dovádí tu příběh "krásné pastýřky Jany" k odmítnutí sňatku s bohatým, mravně ušlechtilým anglickým šlechticem a k tragické smrti "galské panny", kterou způsobí bohatý advokát, měšťácký "donchuán" Marsillat. Jana bývá obvykle označována za počátek nové tendence v tvorbě G. Sandové, tendence k vytváření venkovských románů idealizujících život venkovského lidu.

Das Echo der Revolution erreicht diese abgelegenen ländlichen Gegenden nur gedämpft, doch die alte Feudalgesellschaft wankt, die nationalen Güter werden verkauft, und Nanon wird durch Mut und Intelligenz ihr Schicksal als Frau erobern können. Dieses ländliche Gedicht, das die Schönheit der Creuse und des Berry preist, ist ein Lobgesang auf das 18. Jahrhundert und Rousseau.
