Our society often discourages the verbal expression of emotions, yet we still convey likes, dislikes, status differences, and personalities through nonverbal means. By utilizing vocal expressions, gestures, postures, and movements, we can enhance, limit, or contradict our spoken words, sometimes communicating more effectively without them. In this multidimensional exploration of nonverbal communication, Albert Mehrabian presents original research, innovative experimental methods, and a synthesis of existing studies within a cohesive framework. This framework analyzes the meanings of various nonverbal behaviors, revealing that over half of the variance in their significance can be understood through three orthogonal dimensions: positiveness, potency (or status), and responsiveness. These dimensions form the semantic space of nonverbal communication, aiding in the identification of behavior groups, highlighting differences in nonverbal cues, and generating rules for interpreting inconsistent messages. Additionally, it offers researchers comprehensive measures for describing social behavior. This work is invaluable for professional psychologists and graduate students in psychology, as well as for those in speech and communication, sociology, anthropology, and psychiatry.
