This Volume 5 from the African Development Perspectives Yearbook series focuses on specific countries (South Africa, Nigeria), examines the employment impacts of development co-operation. The book - along with the previous Volume 4 ("Active Labour and Employment Policies in Africa") - not only present facts, trends and analyses, but also lay the foundation for a comprehensive strategy of employment creation and poverty alleviation in Africa. Therefore, the two books may be used for all those working for Africa's development - at the country, the sectoral and the project level. Development practitioners, government officials, business executives, and development researchers will experience the two volumes as indispensable works of reference. Up to now, there is no comparable work on Africa's labour and employment situation on the market.

Vietnam und Deutschland – zwei Länder, die in kultureller, sozialer, wirtschaftlicher und politischer Hinsicht kaum unterschiedlicher sein könnten. Die Beiträge des Bandes thematisieren jedoch die Zukunft der Städte in beiden Ländern, mit einem Fokus auf den Verkehrssektor als Lebensader urbaner Räume. Der Leser entdeckt verschiedene Perspektiven und Ansätze zu zentralen Fragen: Wie beeinflussen Entwicklungen in einem Land globale Zusammenhänge und somit auch andere Länder? Welche Visionen haben wir von der Stadt der Zukunft? Wie sollten wir Städte heute organisieren, um lebenswerte Bedingungen für morgen zu gewährleisten? Was sind nachhaltige städtische Transportsysteme, und wie können wir bestehende Systeme zukunftssicher gestalten? Dieser Band basiert auf zwei Konferenzen – 2010 in Hanoi und 2011 in Bremen – und dokumentiert den deutsch-vietnamesischen Dialog sowie den Austausch zwischen Vertretern unterschiedlicher wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen wie Ingenieurwesen, Geschichtswissenschaft, Kulturwissenschaft, Kunstwissenschaft, Politikwissenschaft, Raumplanung, Verkehrsökonomie und Volkswirtschaftslehre. Die Veröffentlichung wurde durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung sowie das Auswärtige Amt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland im Rahmen des Jahres „Deutschland in Vietnam 2010“ gefördert.

This publication examines studies on Japan and Germany, with a focus on comparative analyses. It centers on the impacts of globalization and the world economic and financial crisis, particularly how labor markets responded and the ensuing challenges for labor and social policy. Amid a looming global employment crisis, the work analyzes labor market developments in two countries that were notably successful in economic growth and social inclusion during the latter half of the 20th century. The recent history of labor markets and policies in Germany and Japan is categorized into four phases: (1) strong institutional coordination before globalization; (2) the emergence of an employment crisis due to globalization and specific national factors, such as Japan's real estate bubble burst and Germany's reunification; (3) efforts since 2003 to address the crisis through a market-optimistic approach; and (4) new challenges stemming from the Global Financial and Economic Crisis of 2009. This book results from the conference “The flexibilization of labor markets between globalization and the global economic crisis: Comparing Japan and Germany,” held at Bremen University of Applied Sciences in June 2009.
