Proceedings of the 1st International Symposium on Biological (ontrol of Bacterial Plant Diseases In the present Proceedings of the 1st International Symposium on Biological Control of Bacterial Plant Diseases the contributions of oral presentations and posters are combined under the topics of seven sessions, together with one chapter on the biocontrol of fungal diseases. In this comprehensive compilation of 84 contributions the up-to-date status of research in the field of biocontrol is summarized. Besides promising biocontrol agents, such as antagonistic microorganisms and bacteriophages, natural compounds like essential oils and other new tools such as resistance inducers and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are discussed with their direct control effects and with results of basic research on their physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms. In several cases the implementation of these methods in the practice of greenhouse and crop field is presented. With the high level of the many fundamental and applied research activities, as presented in the Proceedings, the development ofenvironmentally friendly and safe control strategies at presence and for the future, reflects the general importance of biocontrol of bacterial plant diseases.
