Counting and computing with one’s fingers – that is a no-no! But not if you do it correctly. It is important not to mistake the path with the goal. Studies from cognitive psychology, cultural history and neuroscience show that calculations of quantity and number as well as mathematical abilities in general are closely connected to the cognitive representation of the fingers. Using one’s fingers as an aid in a math course is no longer considered a taboo since we have learned that fingers can play a major role in the development of a solid understanding of number and calculations – especially in children with poor counting skills.
