The project PARCEQUE was a collaborative effort involving Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius, Boris Sieverts, Stefan Shankland, and myself, as part of the Quartiers Créatifs initiative by Marseille-Provence 2013 and supported by the Goethe-Institut. This two-year artistic research project took place in Les Hauts de Mazargues, a district in southern Marseille near the Calaques National Park. Historically, this area housed the main prison of Marseille (Les Baumettes) and various refugee camps post-World War II, later replaced by social housing projects in the 1970s. Currently, urban planning efforts aim to connect the old town of Mazargues with industrial areas and social housing, yet the shopping mall remains the primary public space for residents. To address the lack of communal gathering places, we installed a wooden veranda for a month, serving as a sculptural platform for memory, discussions, exhibitions, and workshops. Our fieldwork culminated in a public program in May and June 2013 on a brownfield site near the E. Leclerc Sormiou shopping mall. Over four weeks, local residents, volunteers, students, and various community members engaged in building, cooking, and participating in PARCEQUE, which included 101 proposals for the transforming neighborhood. “Je travaille aussi. CHEZ TOI!” and the BAR DU ROND POINT were among these initiatives.
