This study undertaken in the context of the Collaborative Research Centre “Foreignness and poverty. Changes of types of inclusion and exclusion from Antiquity to the present day” focusses on a comprehensive understanding of euergetism as an institution. For this purpose, the reciprocity of gift and gratitude as the basis for the motives of ancient benefactors and the development of euergetism are investigated. For the first time, a general analysis of the inclusion of the different types of non-citizen groups into benefactions is made, such as Romans, metics, freedmen, slaves or foreigners. By doing so, a clear relationship with the gradual formation of elites within poleis emerged, as did the fact that privileged groups had been favoured increasingly in the course of time. New insights were also gained, not least by the help of inscriptions, with regard to special and generalising terms for groups of non-citizens and to their integration into the number of recipients of benefactions. In the future, the compiled source material in the book will allow systematic studies of individual euergetic inscriptions dealing with groups of non-citizens.
