In recent years, the traditional view of common ground as shared information in communication has faced challenges. Researchers now consider both L1 and intercultural interactions, proposing that common ground is a dynamic, emergent process. This involves the convergence of mental representations of shared knowledge, assumed mutual knowledge, and the rapport and knowledge co-constructed during communication. This evolving understanding has been applied in various research projects, revealing new elements and interpretations of common ground. Some scholars see it as a component of a complex contextual information structure, while others highlight the dynamic interplay between core and emergent common ground in intercultural contexts. The work gathers researchers from diverse fields of pragmatics and communication to explore adjustments to the concept of common ground based on L1 communication, the relationship between context, situation, and common ground, and how relevant knowledge is selected for inclusion in both core and emergent common ground. This comprehensive approach aims to deepen our understanding of communication across different cultural contexts.
