In a seedy motel room in Bangkok, the body of the Norwegian ambassador is discovered. Harry Hole is dispatched to Thailand to discreetly investigate the case in collaboration with his Thai-American colleague Liz Crumley. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear to him that this is about more than just a murder. It appears that several individuals in Norway had a vested interest in sending him to Thailand. However, Harry is determined to expose the vermin that cannot withstand the light of day.
