Více o knize
Over its long history, undergraduate education has evolved from a focus on classical texts for a select group destined for careers in ministry and teaching to a system responding to the demands of a rapidly industrializing society. The 19th century saw a shift from classical curricula to practical subjects, driven by the need for skilled graduates. Post-World War II economic growth further fueled this demand, leading to an explosion of vocational programs to accommodate the increasing number of students seeking education. Today, the undergraduate curriculum may be entering a new phase, influenced by the needs of a sophisticated economy and advances in cognitive sciences. This evolution raises a critical question: Are colleges and universities equipped with the right curricula and pedagogy to prepare students for the future? The author examines this question through various measures, including preparation for citizenship, character development, and improvement of interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. He also explores unconventional teaching methods, prospects for change, and the potential for reform, ultimately reflecting on the future of undergraduate education and its role in helping students lead successful and meaningful lives.
