Among the significant social shifts of the post-World War II era is the transformation in Jewish-Christian relations, marked by shared scriptural readings and open discussions of differences and similarities. However, many of these encounters have become predictable, often overlooking the powerful emotions they evoke. This work highlights how emotions like shame, envy, and desire influence these interactions, proposing a fresh perspective on interreligious relations. By examining modern and contemporary writers—novelists and poets—who navigate the complex space between Judaism and Christianity, the text emphasizes the creative potential arising from these intense exchanges. It acknowledges the need to confront a dominant Christian narrative that has shaped twentieth-century American poetry, while also suggesting that literature can reveal an alternative interreligious space that is both risky and generative.
