In November 1937 Shanghai, Yaya, an eight-year-old girl from a wealthy diamond merchant family, is passionate about the piano and preparing for an important audition. However, her father decides they must flee the city due to the impending Japanese invasion. Unaware of the danger, Yaya runs away the night before their departure, determined to reach her audition. Amidst the chaos of the evacuation, she is caught in a bombardment and saved by Tuduo, a street urchin who finds her unconscious in the ruins. Once she learns her family has fled to Hong Kong without her, Yaya resolves to join them, and Tuduo dreams of a better life with her family. He decides to accompany her on the perilous journey, but first, he must escape the clutches of Zhu, the leader of a gang of homeless boys. Zhu, upon discovering Yaya's wealthy background, plots to kidnap her for ransom. As they flee south, Yaya and Tuduo encounter a range of characters, both kind and cruel. Their contrasting backgrounds and personalities lead them to valuable lessons about judging others by character rather than status. Amidst the war's gloom, their youthful imagination and humor provide a poetic touch to their harrowing adventure, highlighting the resilience of youth in the face of tragedy.
