Více o knize

Russian author Boris Akunin delights in literary experimentation. His first U.S. release features a brilliant young detective, Erast Petrovich Fandorin, in 1876 Moscow. Following this, Akunin's second novel pays homage to Golden Age whodunits aboard a luxurious steamship. In contrast, his latest work blends war and romance rather than focusing on crime, with many mysteries being quite transparent. Set in 1877-78 during the military conflict between tsarist Russia and the Ottoman Empire, the story follows Fandorin, now part of the diplomatic corps, and Varya Suvorova, a determined 22-year-old telegraphist. Varya aims to reunite with her fiancé, an army volunteer, but his accusation of espionage complicates matters. To secure his release, Varya collaborates with Fandorin, despite her initial disdain for him. As Varya investigates a suspicious colonel in Bucharest, she becomes embroiled in a deadly duel, while a series of murders and a British plot against Russia unfold. Akunin vividly captures the tumultuous atmosphere of 19th-century combat, with clever dialogue and a strong female lead in Varya. However, the narrative is burdened with unnecessary exchanges and minor characters, potentially diminishing the reader's engagement before the climax.
