As Varya investigates a suspicious colonel in Bucharest, she becomes embroiled in a deadly duel, and a series of murders ensue, alongside allegations of a British plot against Russia. Akunin vividly captures the chaos of 19th-century warfare, with clever dialogue and a strong female lead. However, the narrative occasionally becomes bogged down by trivial exchanges and distractions, potentially diminishing reader engagement before reaching the climax.
