Set against the backdrop of World War I, the story follows Max as he embarks on a perilous mission for the enigmatic German spy Fritz Lemmer, linked to his father's murder. Traveling to the isolated Orkney Islands to retrieve a crucial file from a German captain, Max must navigate his conflicting loyalties. Meanwhile, his friend Sam Twentyman, now chief mechanic for the British diplomatic fleet in Paris, faces danger from a suspicious faction within the Japanese delegation, complicating their intertwined fates.
