In October 1890 London, crime scene photographer Sarah Bain is thrilled to marry Detective Sergeant Barrett, but their wedding takes a dark turn when a stabbing victim is found in the church crypt. Newlyweds Sarah and Barrett, along with friends Lord Hugh Staunton and Mick O'Reilly, dive into the investigation of the deceased, Charles Firth, known for his "spirit photography." As Sarah develops Firth's church photographs, she uncovers a blurred figure attacking him. The spiritualist community claims the church is haunted, but Sarah, a skeptic, discovers the victim had many human enemies, including a scientist studying the supernatural, his psychic daughter, and an heiress determined to expose fraudulent mediums. A ghost-hunting expedition in the tunnels beneath a demolished jail leads to another murder and a new set of suspects. As Sarah seeks the truth behind both crimes, she uncovers dark secrets about her own family. Her long-lost father becomes the prime suspect in a cold-case murder, revealing that even the most resolute skeptic can be haunted by their past.
