Set against the harsh backdrop of the African desert, the narrative follows Mr. George Lawrence, a beleaguered civil servant grappling with multiple crises. Additionally, a dangerous smallpox epidemic looms, compounded by frustrating directives from distant authorities. The relentless Harmattan wind adds to his burdens, enveloping him in a suffocating cloud of dust and despair.
